Your solar system is just about ready to start powering your home! After the successful inspection of your solar panel installation, we’re one step closer to living the next few decades with clean, renewable energy on your side. This step involves obtaining Permission to Operate (PTO) from your local utility company.

To receive PTO, we’ll submit the approved permit card to your utility company. This document confirms that your solar has been installed correctly and meets all local regulations, as well as the requirements laid out by the power company for small-scale electricity generation like your new solar panel system.

If you recall back at the Design & Permitting step, we already submitted your net metering agreement. Net metering allows you to offset your energy consumption by sending excess solar energy back to the grid. This is the mechanism used to significantly reduce your monthly utility bills. The utility knows how much energy to expect from your system and gives us the green light to flip the switch.

Activating Your Solar System

Once we have the necessary approvals, we’ll remotely activate your solar system. This process is typically quick and easy – basically the press of a button – and then your system will start generating clean energy immediately! In the rare event that we need to return on-site to complete activation in person, your Concierge contact will help find the best time to make that happen.

Your solar has been installed, so what’s next? We need to get approval from your local city or county permit authority through a solar panel inspection, confirming that the system was installed safely and correctly according to the approved set of plans we started with. Once we get a date from the city, we will call you to let you know when we’ll be coming by.

There may be forms that you need to sign, and the inspector may require access to your home. So we ask that someone over the age of 18 is available whenever possible. We know it can be an inconvenience and appreciate you working with us. This solar panel inspection process safeguards your investment and ensures your system operates optimally, as well as protecting your future home improvement projects from hangups with any permits down the road.

What to Expect When You’re Inspected

After we complete our internal quality assurance on the work done at install, we’ll reach out to the local office for a date. Once we lock down an appointment from your building permitting authority, we’ll contact you to cross-coordinate.

On the appointed day, a building inspector will visit your property, along with a representative from our team. They may need access to your home to examine certain components of your solar system to ensure they meet all requirements for approved solar panels. So what can you do to facilitate a smooth inspection process? It’s important to have someone over the age of 18 present during the inspection to grant access to your home and answer any questions the inspector may have. Just like during the install, please keep the area around your system components clear of any obstructions to allow the inspector to conduct a thorough examination.

Some inspections are more rigorous than others depending on the scope of work completed. We aim for a first-time approval every time, but in the event that any corrections are required, we’ll jump on it as quickly as possible and keep you posted on the next steps.

When the inspector approves our handiwork on your solar system, they will sign the permit card. We use that to get your system approved by the utility company for operation and integration into the power mix of your local grid.

We’ll contact you to schedule the big day, ideally within a few days but possibly up to a week or more out depending on availability, and then head to your house for delivery and setup of your solar power system. Although we’re done with the heavy lifting after this step, your solar system isn’t ready to turn on just yet.

What to Expect on Installation Day

Our team of experienced solar professionals will arrive at your home bright and early on the scheduled day. Usually, this is a one-day event, starting first thing in the morning. The installation process typically takes all day, but may extend into several days depending on the scope.

The installation itself involves the following steps:

  1. Arrival & Site Preparation: Our team shows up with safety equipment and cones to rope off the “exclusion area”, which just refers to any high-traffic or potentially hazardous work areas that we want to keep non-technicians away from.
  2. Roof Check & Prep: Our technicians will carefully assess your roof and prepare it for the solar panel installation. We’ll ensure the designated mounting planes are free of debris and remain structurally sound at all planned penetration points. While rare, it’s still possible that we can miss spongy or overly worn spots on the roof that should be addressed prior to install, to avoid unnecessary expenses down the road.
  3. Mounting System Installation: The next step is to install the mounting system, which consists of racking, feet and flashing. This system will securely hold your solar panels in place to the roof, with watertight seals around the base of each footing and tight clamps to ensure stability in the event of high winds.
  4. Solar Panel Placement: Our team will carefully place the solar panels onto the mounting system according to the designed plan sets, ensuring optimal solar energy capture as intended.
  5. Electrical Wiring: Conduits will be run from the roof to the inverter or combiner box, which is typically installed on the outside of your home. We will also install any batteries and other components required for your complete solar system.
  6. System Connection: We’ll connect your solar system to your home’s electrical panel. This will allow your system to generate clean, renewable energy and offset your reliance on traditional electricity without any interruption to your lifestyle (once we can safely activate it).
  7. Clean Up & Departure: Finally, we’ll tidy up after ourselves. We believe in “leave it better than you found it” and strive to practice it every day. We always want to treat your home with utmost respect and bid you farewell with a smile.

Obviously, the core priority of solar is gaining maximum sun exposure throughout the day.
